About Retina Australia
(NSW)
Retina Australia NSW supports Retinitis
Pigmentosa, Macular Degeneration and like conditions.
Retinitis Pigmentosa is the leading cause of
youth blindness. One in 3,000 babies are born with Retinitis Pigmentosa
which is second only to Diabetes as the cause of blindness in the
working age population. One in 80 people carry the gene which causes
Retinitis Pigmentosa.
Macular Degeneration is usually 'age
related' but it can occur in the young where it is called Stargardt
Disease. Usher Syndrome is a combination of deafness from birth
(moderate to severe) with the person later presenting with Retinitis
Pigmentosa.
Retina Australia NSW is a member of Retina Australia which is a
voluntary organisation of State and Territory groups concerned with
retinal degenerative diseases
We provide funds for scientific research, information and peer
support to people and families affected by retinal degenerative
diseases.
